Keep Running Your Race: Encouragement for the Working Mom

For a long time, I was accustomed to being present with my children throughout the day. My days were shaped around the rhythm of family life, motherhood, homeschooling, and the many ordinary moments that come with being available and present at home.

Returning to full-time work has changed that rhythm.

There is sacrifice involved in this season. There are moments when being away from my children during the day is difficult. There is tiredness, adjustment, responsibility, and the continual challenge of learning how to give myself faithfully to both my family and my work.

Some days feel easier than others. Some days require more of me than I expected. I am learning how to navigate a new rhythm, carry new responsibilities, and embrace the season that is currently before me.

Through it all, God has been teaching me something about seasons, faithfulness, endurance, motherhood, leadership, and ministry.

Every Season Has Its Own Assignment

The shape of faithful motherhood can change from season to season.

There was a season when my daily ministry was primarily within my home. My days centred around my children, their education, their needs, and the responsibility of creating a home in which they could grow, learn, and flourish.

This season looks different.

My days now include a workplace, colleagues, responsibilities, leadership, systems, problems to solve, and people to serve.

Ecclesiastes 3:1 (NKJV) says:

“To everything there is a season,
A time for every purpose under heaven:

I am learning that every season carries its own assignment. The way I serve my family may look different in this season, yet the call to faithfulness remains the same.

The question I continue to ask is:

What does faithfulness look like in the season I am in now?

Sometimes faithfulness looks like being present at home. Sometimes it looks like getting up early, preparing everyone for the day, going to work, carrying responsibility, serving others, and returning home to the people I love.

Every season has its own assignment, and I want to be faithful with the one God has entrusted to me now.

The Sacrifice Is Part of the Race

Working mothers often carry sacrifices that few people see.

Every morning, I leave my children because I am also working for my children and for my family.

That reality carries weight.

There are moments I miss. There are days when I wish I could be in two places at once. There are times when tiredness follows me home and I still want to give my family the best of myself.

Hebrews 12:1 (NKJV) says:

Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us,

I keep returning to those words: the race that is set before us.

My race may look different from another mother’s race. Her season may look different from mine. Her assignment may require something entirely different.

I am responsible for running the race that has been set before me.

Faithfulness is found in running the course God has placed before us with endurance. Some seasons require sacrifice. Some require perseverance. Some stretch us beyond what feels comfortable and teach us that we are capable of carrying more than we thought.

So I keep running.

My Children Still Receive My Ministry

One of the things I am learning is that presence carries many forms.

My children are still watching me.

They are watching how I respond to responsibility. They are watching how I persevere through difficult transitions. They are watching how I work, how I serve, how I lead, and how I continue to make our family a priority while carrying responsibilities beyond our home.

Through the life I live, I am teaching them how to work faithfully, carry responsibility, persevere through change, serve others, lead with integrity, and remain committed to the people they love.

Our children learn from the words we speak, and they also learn from the race they watch us run.

My ministry to my children continues through the prayers I pray over them, the conversations we have, the moments we share, the sacrifices I make, and the example I set before them.

Motherhood continues to shape everything I do.

The Workplace Is Also a Place of Ministry

I am also learning to see the workplace differently.

Ministry can look like leading with kindness. It can look like bringing order into confusion, serving people well, encouraging someone who is struggling, working with excellence, protecting the vulnerable, solving problems, and carrying the presence of Christ into ordinary spaces.

Colossians 3:23 (NKJV) says:

And whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men,

The same woman who prays over her children at home can carry wisdom into a meeting, compassion into a difficult conversation, excellence into her work, and the presence of Christ into an ordinary working day.

God can use us wherever He has placed us.

Every conversation can carry kindness. Every decision can be shaped by integrity. Every responsibility can become an opportunity to serve.

The workplace is filled with people who carry their own burdens, challenges, hopes, and struggles. Sometimes ministry looks very ordinary. It looks like listening. Encouraging. Helping. Leading well. Creating an environment where people feel valued.

These ordinary acts of faithfulness matter.

Leadership Is Stewardship

My leadership role has also taught me that leadership is a form of stewardship.

Leadership gives us an opportunity to influence the atmosphere around us. It gives us the responsibility to lead people with dignity, create healthy systems, bring clarity, encourage growth, model integrity, and use our influence to make the lives of others better.

Influence is something to steward carefully.

I want the people I work with to be better because I was there. I want to create environments where people can flourish. I want to lead in a way that reflects the character of Christ through wisdom, compassion, integrity, courage, and service.

Leadership becomes an expression of ministry when we recognise that the people entrusted to our influence matter to God.

The work itself matters, and the way we treat people while doing that work matters deeply.

Giving Myself Grace for the Transition

A new rhythm takes time to establish.

I am still learning.

Some days feel balanced. Other days require more from one area of my life than another. Some days I feel strong and capable. Other days remind me how much I need the grace of God.

I am learning to release the pressure of carrying every part of my life perfectly.

Faithfulness is my goal.

I am called to walk faithfully with God through the season He has entrusted to me.

So, to every working mom navigating a similar season, keep running your race.

Your sacrifice has purpose. Your work has value. Your leadership has influence. Your children are watching a woman who continues to show up, serve, persevere, provide, and love them deeply.

Your ministry is present around the dinner table. It is present in the prayers whispered over your children. It is present in the office, the meeting room, the difficult conversations, the decisions you make, and every place God has entrusted to your care.

Every season has its own assignment.

This season may require endurance, but endurance is producing something in you, in your family, and in the people you have been called to influence.

Keep running the race that has been set before you.
